There are a large number of applications in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries where Carlson's filtration media contribute to the clarity, purity and sterility of a large variety of products. Many antibiotics are manufactured using filtration as part of the sterilisation process. Carlson's XE1700H sterilising sheet has been designed for this purpose and achieves very high levels of sterility. Because flow rates through a sterilising filter are very low, pre-filtration can assist by using XE20H to XE280H to remove the bulk of particulate matter.

Vaccines, sera, injection solutions, salines and blood plasma can be treated in the same way.

Most types of medicinal syrup such as rose-hip and cough syrups can be filtered satisfactorily in a single filtration. Carlson XE5, XE10H, XE20H or XE50H are ideal for this purpose due to their ability to cater for a wide range of viscosity and impurity levels. Products with high levels of impurity or high viscosity may require the use of a filter aid such as kieselguhr and Carlson's W2N high performance cellulose backing sheet.
